Even non-industrial data can be useful through Insight with Extend by Auth0
Following on from last week's Libelium Meshlium announcement I wanted to highlight another interesting advance in IoT; with Insight's adoption of Extend by Auth0, and how Insight users can leverage Extend within their own applications.
Extend is a powerful extensibility and scripting framework, which in Insight allows users to translate non-industrial data into a schema that works with the Insight platform.
Easily adapt data from non-industrial sources
With the industrial internet of things (IIoT) providing new opportunities to extend business value many companies are augmenting existing automation systems with new instrumentation. But what if we expanded that even further and added non-industrial data sources to the mix.
What new context or relationships may be uncovered if you could see your process information overlaid with data from safety helmets? or distance to travel to a set location? or shift status information?
Real-life example: Off-shore yacht race
One surprising example where we have used this technology ourselves was tracking the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht race. The Wonderware Online team wanted to prove that it was indeed possible to collect and analyse, in near real-time, all of the information generated as the fleet sailed the grueling 628-mile course. With particular focus on one yacht: Grace O'Malley.
Ocean-going yachts are fitted with a lot of sophisticated equipment, ranging from industrial alarm, monitoring and control systems, through to IoT devices for measuring humidity and temperature, and even safety devices transmitting regular GPS coordinates. So this exercise needed to not only consolidate information from multiple systems - some in unusual formats - but cope with late-arriving and intermittent data due to the yachts being miles out to sea.
We were able to use the Extend editor within Insight to import data from some of these unusual data sources e.g. XML/RSS feeds and data from wearables, and transform it into something that could be displayed alongside the more traditional industrial sources.
As you can see from these dashboards, we were able to visualize EVERYTHING: speed, distance traveled, current location, even stats on the crew themselves - heart rate, shift, even their emotions.
How could you take advantage of this in your operations? Could this add an extra level of safety for your personnel? Or provide you with an idea of process performance against stress indicators such as elevated heart rate? The ideas are limited only by your imagination.
All the benefits of coding for "the rest of us"
While all of this sounds like it could be super-complicated and involve weeks of engineering time, together with Auth0 we've made it easy.
Once Extend is enabled on your solution, simply head to the Administrator portal and click on Data Sources. For any CSV/JSON data source Extend scripting becomes available, with Insight automatically leveraging the Extend scripting environment to help make more of the data you publish.
This is just the first of many scenarios where the Wonderware Online team expect to bring the power and flexibility of Extend by Auth0 to Insight customers. Stay tuned for more.
